J. Edward Stout (1923-2001) long-time historian of Franklin stands at The Peak, a 40-foot promontory above a Capoolong Creek tributary that prompted the title of his township history book Facts and Fantasies of Franklin. The Peak is so entwined with a 1902 newspaper tale of fantasy – repeated in his book – about siding rocks, subterranean passageways, and hieroglyphs, that some people doubt its existence.
